A famous knitwear town
When the first stocking frames were introduced to Hawick in 1771, this would be the date given to the foundation of the textile industry in Hawick.
The River Teviot provided essential power for Hawick’s early textile industry, starting with knitting machines in the 1770’s, transforming it from cottage industry to a world-famous manufacturer of knitwear and tweed. In less than 100 years the town would be at the very heart of the knitwear industry in Scotland. Textiles expansion continued with foreign markets being conquered and in the 1960’s Hawick became the highest earning town in the United Kingdom per head of population.
Our handcrafted products are still produced using the soft waters of the town’s River Teviot, using traditional methods honed over many years.
So, when it came to naming our company, we could think of no more fitting a name than Teviot Knitwear, after the famous river which powered the textile industry more than 150 years ago.
