How to care for your knitwear

Teviot Knitwear

For washing cashmere and lambswool at home, we recommend only gentle hand washing. We would never recommend washing your knitwear in a washing machine and never use a tumble dryer.

For knitwear garments that has minimal contact with your skin such as a cardigan or jersey, we would suggest they only need to be washed once or twice a year depending on usage. We recommend airing your knitwear after wearing.

For knitwear that you wear directly on your skin, you may need to wash after every couple of wears.

For washing instructions, please follow these steps:

  • Add a small amount of woollen handwash detergent such as Woolite to a basin of lukewarm water.
  • Soak the knitwear in the lukewarm water for a couple of minutes.
  • Gently squeeze the garment, do not wring or stretch (this can be done between two dry towels).
  • Remove garment from the basin.
  • Gently rinse the garment in clean lukewarm water.
  • Remove from the basin and then squeeze as much of the water out of the garment as possible but do not wring.
  • Lay the garment out flat on a towel and reshape the knitwear (an ironing board or table is good for this, make sure there are no sharp folds).

Do not hang your knitwear on a rack or on a hanger as this will cause the knitwear to be stretched out.

Avoid direct heat and never tumble dry.

Avoid direct sunlight.

Never add fabric conditioner to the water.

Regularly air your knitwear after use.

How to store your knitwear

  • Proper storage is key to keeping garments in pristine condition.
  • Natural moth repellents to protect your knitwear, such as cedar wood balls and anti-moth sachets
  • Store knitwear in breathable bags or drawers to prevent dust and pests.
  • Fold knitwear rather than hanging as this will maintain the garment shape and extend its life.
